Component 3: English for Tourism

Teachers Up 2023 offers an English for tourism program and a certificate program in teaching English for tourism. Both activities are FREE.
Teaching English for Tourism Certificate
This 12-hour online certificate program in Teaching English for Tourism is for English teacher trainers and teachers of English in El Salvador. This certificate program will help teachers develop the language and skills needed to teach English for tourism. The program consists of three Zoom sessions on October 21, October 28, and November 4 (9 am to 11 am) and six hours of independence study. 

Program Eligibility Requirements:
  • Be a citizen of and reside in El Salvador 
  • Be a Teachers Up member (If you have not registered, you can do so here.) 
  • Be a teacher of English or an English teacher trainer
  • Have regular access to a device with reliable Internet access, a microphone, and a camera.
  • Have successfully completed the English for Tourism course offered by Teachers Up or passed a proficiency test administered by Teachers Up by the time the certificate program starts
  • Be available to attend the three Zoom sessions on October 21, October 28, and November 4, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am
  • Allocate at least 2 hours of independence study per week on the program

English for Tourism 
The English for Tourism program provides learners with the skills and vocabulary for careers in tourism. The courses are open to any Salvadoran teachers of English, professionals in tourism, and students majoring in teaching English or tourism.

The program consists of two modules: Module 1 meets from April 15 to May 27, 2023, and Module 2 from August 26 to September 23. English for Tourism classes will be offered on Saturdays in two schedules: from 8:30 am to 9:30 am and  from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Classes will be taught on Zoom and will last for one hour. Students are expected to work asynchronously on class activities for two hours per week.

Registration for Module 2 is now open. After registering, for the purpose of diagnosis, new participants (those who did not complete Module 1) will take a required English entry test which will not affect the status of the registration. Eligible registrants will receive a confirmation email containing the link to the entry test. They need to complete the entry test by Wednesday, August 23, 2023. We have limited spaces available and will be accepting participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are five classes in Module 2. If participants complete all of the following criteria, they will be awarded a completion certificate.
  • Completed the entry test (new participants only)
  • Attended at least 4 out of 5 Zoom sessions
  • Passed at least 4 out of 5 unit tests (scoring 70% or higher)
  • Submitted at least 4 out of 5 unit assignments
  • Completed the exit test

English for Tourism Instructors Needed

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement lesson plans aligned with course objectives

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree (or above) in English, TESOL, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English as a foreign language, including experience teaching English for tourism; OR a tourism professional with training/certification of teaching English with a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of the English language and grammar
  • Familiarity with the latest teaching methodologies and technology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a team and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Passion for travel and tourism industry is a plus!
