Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Secondary Educators
Summer 2025
Are you a mid-career educator aged 30-50 who is passionate and motivated, with significant experience teaching students aged 14-18? Do you want to deepen your understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions? Then this exchange program is for you.
This intensive, post-graduate academic programs offer foreign secondary school educators and administrators a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions. The goal of the program is to enhance curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States in secondary schools and other academic institutions around the globe. The SUSIs will take place across various academic institutions in the United States over five weeks during summer 2025. Each institute includes a four-to-five-week academic residency, with an optional one-week integrated study tour in the U.S. if conditions allow. Program Description: The SUSIs will bring together three multinational groups of 20 experienced secondary educators, including teachers, administrators, curriculum developers, and Ministry of Education officials. Participants will gain valuable insights into U.S. society, education, and culture—both historical and contemporary. The focus of the institutes is to provide content and materials for developing high school curricula about the United States. Two of the institutes are designed specifically for secondary school teachers, while the third is tailored for experienced administrators and curriculum developers. Please note that this SUSI program emphasizes content and materials about the U.S. rather than teaching methods or pedagogy. Through a blend of traditional and interdisciplinary approaches, the program will explore the history and evolution of U.S. institutions and values, as well as current political, social, and economic debates. The four-week academic residencies will take place at U.S. college and university campuses and will include lectures, panels, seminars, workshops, site visits, and cultural activities. Study tours will showcase the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States. Community service activities will also be incorporated, offering participants firsthand experience of the vital role of volunteerism in U.S. civil society. Alumni engagement will continue through webinars, grant-funded follow-on projects, and workshops. Candidate Description and Qualifications:
