About Teachers Up in El Salvador
Background and Growth
Teachers Up began in 2020 in response to an urgent need: supporting English teachers in El Salvador with training on how to teach online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since its inception, Teachers Up has grown into a cornerstone of professional support for English teachers across El Salvador. Today, Teachers Up connects teachers from every department, fostering collaboration, knowledge‐sharing, and a shared commitment to improving English‐language education.
Mission and Vision
At its core, Teachers Up exists to empower English teachers, equipping them with the tools, training, and community they need to inspire and engage their students. By promoting ongoing professional development, celebrating teaching excellence, and facilitating peer‐to‐peer mentorship, Teachers Up seeks to enhance learning outcomes, boost teachers’ career prospects, and strengthen El Salvador’s educational fabric, thus contributing to national growth and reducing the impetus for outward migration.
Initiative Focus Areas
The Initiative provides free-of-charge professional development to in-service and pre-service teachers of English from all educational settings (public, private, universities, schools, and language academies) in El Salvador. In 2025, we expanded our reach to include English teachers in Guatemala. All in-service teachers of English, students majoring in English language teaching, and English teacher trainers in El Salvador and Guatemala are invited to be part of the Initiative.
In 2025, the Initiative focuses on four areas: 1) English Teaching Competencies; 2) English Proficiency; 3) Social and Emotional Health, and 4) Scholarships and Recognitions.
Impact and Future Directions
By mid-2025, Teachers Up will expand beyond El Salvador into Guatemala, with support from U.S. embassy funding. Looking ahead, the initiative plans to deepen in-country partnerships, develop microcredential programs for specialized skills, and launch a virtual resource hub for lesson plans, research summaries, and peer discussion forums. Together, Teachers Up members are not just teaching English; they’re building a stronger, more connected educational community for the benefit of all learners.
